Kvass is a traditional fermented Slavic drink made from rye bread with a low to no alcohol content.


  • 330g white sugar
  • 500g German style rye bread
  • Bread yeast
  • 5L water jug


  1. Toast the rye bread
  2. To a water jug add the toasted and sugar
  3. Fill the jug halfway with water
  4. Shake the jug to airate and mix the ingredients
  5. Fill the jug up the 5L line with water
  6. Add the yeast
  7. Cover the jug but do not seal and leave to ferment for at least 2 days
  8. After fermenting, filter off the sedement and bottle.
